Endoscopic Intragastric Balloon

"Lose Weight more than 25 kg in 3 – 6 months without any Complications of Surgeries - A daycare procedure done by an expert GI & Below are the details of the procedure we highly recommend."

What is Endoscopic Intragastric Balloon method for weight reduction?
The BIB (or Bioenterics Intragastric Balloon) System is a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical aid in the treatment of obesity. In conjunction with a supervised diet and behaviour modification program, it can help you achieve the health and aesthetic benefits associated with weight loss.

The BIB is a soft, silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach and filled with sterile saline. With the balloon you will have a feeling of satiety or lack of hunger, thereby reducing the calorie intake and thus weight reduction.

How Does the BIB System Work?
The BIB System is designed to make compliance with a supervised diet and behavior modification program easier. The balloon partially fills the stomach and you would have a feeling of fullness.
A team of physicians, nutritionists, psychologists & exercise therapists will regularly consult with you & design a program to help you successfully reach & maintain your weight loss goals. During the regularly managed meetings with your team, you will learn the principles needed to manage your weight & promote long term health. Some of these include nutrition, exercise, eating behaviors & psychological issues related to food. While learning you will be motivated by your success & turn these principles into habits that will serve you the rest of your life.

Am I a good candidate for BIB ?
If you are at least 40% above your ideal weight and who have failed to obtain prolonged weight loss with other weight control programs, you may be a good candidate.
The BIB System may be particularly useful for people considered too overweight or at increased risk for vital surgery. The use of the BIB System to successfully reduce weight prior to surgery may help reduce the risks associated with surgical procedures on overweight patients

What are the advantages of BIB program?
The BIB program has several advantages over other weight loss plans. With the BIB you can:
Lose more weight than with other diet programs.
Have the benefits of a non- surgical, non-pharmaceutical approach.
Learn principles for long – term success.

How is intragastric balloon inserted in the stomach?
The physician will make an examination of your stomach with an endoscopic camera after giving conscious sedation. If there are no abnormalities, then one introduces the balloon through your mouth and oesophagus in a deflated condition. After it reaches the stomach, the balloon is inflated with saline and is kept to stay there for three to six months.

The procedure takes about half an hour. After observation for some time, the physician will allow you to go back home with various instructions.

There are two main indications for using an intragastric balloon:

  • Pre–surgery for weight loss in severely obese patients to reduce surgical risk.
  • Weight loss in obese patients who have significant health risks related to their obesity and who have failed to achieve and maintain weight loss with a supervised weight–control programme. The patient should have a BMI above 28.

Like other weight loss surgeries, the balloon is a tool and works best when you use it properly, following a low calorie diet. Most of the people do not experience any complications, but you should be aware of:

  • Bleeding or perforation could occur as a result of injury during the balloon insertion or removal, requiring surgical correction.
  • Gastric discomfort; nausea and vomiting are common for the first few days following balloon placement.

The removal of the intragastric balloon is also carried out in an endoscopy suite with the patient sedated. A special needle is inserted though the endoscope to deflate the IGB. Once it is fully deflated it is grasped with specially designed forceps and removed via the mouth. Removal of the IBG usually takes about 10 to 14 minutes. Patients are monitored during removal and recovery until fully alert.
